Hello, I am Inhwan Bae, a PhD candidate in the Department of Communication at Cornell University. I am a member of the Cornell Social Media Lab, advised by Dr. Natalie Bazarova.

My research examines how user-driven platform governance can foster online communities that are sustainable, prosocial, and engaging for all, especially as emerging technologies reshape online behaviors. I investigate the psychological mechanisms underlying civic engagement on social media and works to cultivate deliberative conversations. In my research, I employ simulated social media and multi-agent discourse built specifically for experimental study. My work has been featured in PNAS Nexus, Journal of Medical Internet Research, and Cyberpsychology, Behavior, and Social Networking. My interdisciplinary work on developing a digital literacy program for older adults can be found at the DART Collective. Our projects has been supported by NSF and the President’s Council of Cornell Women.

Before coming to Cornell University, I earned MA and a BA in Communication from Seoul National University and worked at the Institute of Communication Research at Seoul National University.
